NTS x Aphex

The performance of Interactive Tuned Feedback Pendulum Array by Aphex Twin at the Barbican was a groundbreaking showcase of his experimental approach to music. The performance featured a 28-piece orchestra and a choir, all controlled remotely by James, with musicians following cues displayed on a large screen.

This innovative method of directing the orchestra and choir allowed him to manipulate the smallest nuances of pitch and tone, creating an eerie and dissonant soundscape. The climax of the show was the reimagining of Steve Reich's Pendulum Music, in which mirrorball pendulums were suspended with microphones to create hypnotic feedback tones, amplified by 140 lasers that added a mesmerising visual spectacle.
